Black Rock Urchin (Echinometra lucunter)

The Black Rock Urchin are tank grazers and feed on algae found on substrates and rockwork. They don’t typically consume corals, but their movement can inadvertently damage sensitive corals by crawling over or dislodging them. Additionally, urchins sometimes consume coralline algae, which some aquarists cultivate. If the tank’s algae levels are low, urchins can be fed by attaching algae sheets to rocks using clips or rubber bands.

While some urchins possess venom, most are safe for aquarists. Injuries usually occur when an aquarist accidentally brushes against an urchin, getting pricked by its spines. These spines, particularly from thinner-spined urchins, can break off in the skin, so it’s important to handle urchins carefully to prevent harm to both the urchin and yourself. They are not considered reef-safe.
