The Red Flame Scallop, Ctenoides scaber, also known as the Flame Scallop, has a bright red color, with tentacles that are either red or white. Its shell is covered with fine bumps, resembling a file in texture.
In its natural habitat, the Red Flame Scallop creates a small nest from tiny rocks and coral fragments for protection. However, this may not be as effective in an aquarium setting. If disturbed, it can propel itself through the water by clapping its valves together, aided by its appendages. These scallops can be kept in groups and are compatible with other aquarium inhabitants that don’t pose a threat to them. As filter feeders, they thrive in mature reef aquarium systems, relying on floating microplankton for sustenance. They also require proper levels of alkalinity and calcium. It’s important to note that Red Flame Scallops are sensitive to copper-based medications and high nitrate levels.
