Ninja Star Astrea (Astraea phoebia)

$2.50

The Ninja Star Snail, also known as the Spiny Star Astrea Snail (Astraea phoebia), is a unique addition to home aquariums, with sizes ranging from a nickel to just over a quarter in diameter. These snails are named for the calcified spikes protruding from their shells, resembling a ninja star or the rays of the sun, which serve as a defense mechanism against predators. They are efficient at consuming film and hair algae on aquarium glass and rocks. Although they may struggle to right themselves if flipped upside down, they are capable of doing so and should be placed in the aquarium with care.

This star-shaped snail, with its crown-like spikes, is a peaceful inhabitant but should not be kept with aggressive tank mates that might harm it. It excels at eating algae, including hairy types, making it a valuable cleaner in established reef tanks. If natural algae are insufficient, supplemental feeding may be necessary. The Spiny Star Astrea Snail is sensitive to high nitrate levels, and careful drip acclimation is recommended when introducing it to a new tank environment.
