Volitan Lionfish (Pterois volitans)

$39.99$169.99

The Volitan Lionfish, Pterois volitans, also known as the Red Lionfish or Common Lionfish, has vertical stripes in red, burgundy, white, brown, and black shades. It has tall, banded spines on its dorsal fin and large, fan-shaped pectoral fins.

They have venomous spines that serve as defense mechanisms. Stings are stronger than bee stings, and immersing the affected area in hot water for 30 minutes helps neutralize the venom. Immediate medical attention is recommended, especially for severe reactions.

Volitan Lionfish grow quickly to about 15 inches and require a 120-gallon aquarium with plenty of hiding spots. Initially shy, they will eventually become visible. They may eat smaller fish, shrimp, and crustaceans in the tank. To entice feeding when first introduced, offer live saltwater feeder shrimp. Their diet should include live shrimp, fish, and crustacean flesh. With time and patience, they can transition to eating fresh or frozen table shrimp, silversides, and squid.
