The Shaving Brush Algae, or Penicillus dumetosus, is the largest member of the Penicillus family. Its stalk can grow up to 4 inches long and 1 inch in diameter, with the “needle” portion of the plant reaching up to 3 inches in length. Due to its high calcification, it is not eaten by fish or snails, making it an excellent display piece. Its larger size makes it visually appealing both as a standalone feature or in groups.
For optimal growth, plant it in a fine sandy substrate, though it can also survive in coarser substrates. Despite its slower growth rate, it provides some filtration if placed in your display tank or sump.
This algae can thrive under low to moderate light but grows best under moderate to high lighting. We provide Shaving Brush algae that is at least 3 inches tall, and they can grow up to nearly 4 inches. While all macroalgae carry some risk of going sexual and releasing carbon dioxide into the aquarium, the risk of adverse pH changes from this species is extremely low. To support its growth, maintain calcium levels in your tank between 350-450 ppm.
When transplanted, Shaving Brush algae will lose their bristles, which usually turn pale before falling off. However, new bristles will emerge after the transplant.
