The Nerite snail is a robust, roundish snail with diverse markings, making it a visually appealing choice for saltwater tanks or reefs. These snails are adept at consuming a range of cyanobacteria, including film algae, finer hair algae, and diatoms. They are completely reef-safe and highly effective at cleaning aquarium rocks and glass. However, they typically don’t feed on most display macroalgae.
The Nerite snails we provide are usually sized from the diameter of a nickel to that of a quarter. When introduced to an aquarium, Nerite snails often initially try to leave the water. It’s best to house them in tanks with lids or rims with thick lips to keep them contained. Within about a week, they usually adapt to their new environment and understand their limits. If they do manage to escape during this period, they can be safely returned to the tank, as they carry water in their shells, which allows them to breathe if they reach the water line.
