The Hawkwing Conch (Strombus raninus) is a peaceful marine snail and a great addition to reef aquariums. Native to the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico, this species is highly valued for its sand-sifting behavior, which helps to clean and aerate the substrate, promoting a healthier tank environment. It coexists well with other tank inhabitants, displaying no aggression except for minor territorial tendencies among males.
The Hawkwing Conch thrives in aquariums with deep, fine sand beds where it can forage for food. This substrate should not be too coarse to prevent damage to its delicate foot. It is hardy and easy to care for, suitable for novice and experienced aquarists alike. As a detritivore, it feeds on organic debris, uneaten food, and algae from the substrate, but it may require supplemental feeding with algae wafers or spirulina in low-algae environments.
Growing up to 4-5 inches in length, the Hawkwing Conch requires ample space, making it better suited for aquariums of at least 50 gallons. Its strong appetite ensures it remains active, consistently contributing to substrate maintenance. Like other invertebrates, it is sensitive to high nitrate levels and cannot tolerate copper-based medications, so water quality must be maintained.
