The Banded Serpent Starfish, Ophiolepis superba, primarily feed on detritus and carrion and are not known for targeting live prey, are considered reef safe and typically do not disturb corals. However, they should not be kept with harlequin shrimp or carnivorous fish like puffers and triggerfish, which may pose a threat to them.
These serpent stars come in a range of colors and sizes, and have impressive abilities to regenerate.
They thrive in an established saltwater aquarium with ample live rock that provides hiding spaces. Being nocturnal, they usually conceal themselves under rocks during the day and emerge at night to feed on detritus and small organisms. They are sensitive to copper-based medications and may require supplemental feeding with finely chopped meaty items and invertebrate foods if natural food sources are insufficient.
