The Gold Banded Coral Shrimp, distinguished by its red and white banded abdomen, white claws , and a yellow body, is a member of the Stenopodidae family, commonly known as “Boxing Shrimp.” This name comes from their large pinchers on the third set of legs, which they often hold erect, resembling a boxer in a fighting stance.
In the aquarium, this shrimp requires ample space to move freely without its long antennae coming into contact with nearby corals or anemones. It’s best to keep the Gold Banded Coral Shrimp either alone or with a true mated pair, as they don’t tolerate other members of their species. They may also harass smaller shrimp of different species. While robust, they need careful acclimation, preferably using the Drip Method, to prevent shock from changes in salinity or pH. They are sensitive to copper and high nitrate levels but need adequate iodine for proper molting.
They readily eat most frozen and flaked foods, plankton, and meat. In reef aquariums, they are also known to help control bristleworm populations, aiding in pest management.
