Porcupine Puffer (Diodon holocanthus)

$39.99$199.99

The Porcupine Puffer, Diodon holocanthus, also known as the Porcupinefish or Porcupine Pufferfish, is characterized by spiny projections covering most of its body, which can range in color from light gray to mottled tans, often with dark spots. Its teeth form a beak-like structure, and it compensates for the absence of pelvic fins by skillfully using its pectoral fins for movement.

For housing, a fish-only aquarium of at least 180 gallons with a quality protein skimmer is recommended. The Porcupine Puffer can sometimes show aggression, nipping at the fins of other fish and leaving circular holes. It is known to consume invertebrates in a reef setting. When threatened or frightened, it has the unique ability to inflate its body to nearly double its size.

A diverse diet of meaty foods is essential for the Porcupine Puffer, including squid, krill, clams, and hard-shelled shrimp, which help in wearing down its continuously growing teeth.
