The Jackknife Fish, native to the Caribbean, possesses distinctive long dorsal and caudal fins that give it a fascinating appearance. Its name derives from the resemblance of these fins to a jackknife. Sporting a striking black barred pattern and a silvery coloration, this species is not recommended for reef aquariums, but thrives as a saltwater fish.
To provide a suitable habitat in an aquarium, a tranquil community setting is necessary, requiring a tank volume of 125 gallons or larger, a sandy bottom substrate, abundant live rock for hiding spots, and supplementary food sources. When introducing multiple Jackknife Fish to the aquarium, it is crucial to add them simultaneously to prevent territorial conflicts. During the acclimatization process, the fish typically remains concealed until it feels secure. In reef aquariums, this species may consume crustaceans and other mobile invertebrates.
To encourage the fish to emerge from hiding, regular feeding is essential. Their diet should consist of a diverse array of live foods such as brine shrimp, black worms, and meaty dishes. When hungry, the Jackknife Fish will scour the sandy bottom in search of worms, crustaceans, and small fish, occasionally even consuming fireworms.
